All Eyes On PBB New Faces

SIBU, March 24 (Bernama) -- With nomination and polling dates fixed for the Sarawak Election, speculation now centres on the candidates, especially new faces.

Of special interest is the possible line-up of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, the backbone of the state Barisan Nasional.

Chief Minister and PBB president Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has said that about a quarter of the candidates for the 35 seats allocated to the party would be new.

Party sources said that 10 to 12 new faces were likely be fielded, most of them in constituencies which PBB won with a small majority in the last state election.

"New and possibly young candidates would enable the party to repeat the clean sweep that it achieved in the 2006 state election," according to a PBB source who did not want to be identified.

Several young leaders, most of them with a professional background, has been mentioned, including Universiti Darul Iman lecturer and blogger Mohammad Hailmi Sajili, Cardiologist at Serdang Hospital Dr Annuar Rapee, Kedup branch information chief and lawyer Bernard Phillip, who is the son of former minister Martin Ben, civil servant Alex Ganyan and educationist Joseph Tiam.

Other possible candidates named included Mukah Resident Saudi Narani, Sarawak Common Facilities Managing Director Abang Jemat Abang Bujang, Telang Usan PBB Youth Chief Dennis Ngau, the Chief Minister's former political secretary Robertson Mawa and current political secretaries Tengku Geruna and Robert Laing Anyie.

The party is also said to be considering people with religious credentials, including Sarawak Mufti Kipli Yassin. Among the other possible candidates are teacher and music composer Patrik Khamis and PBB Demak Jaya deputy Chief Dr Hazlan Hipni.

There is also talk that MP Datuk Wahab Dollah and a prominent Bumiputra corporate figure are being considered as candidates.

However, a party insider said the situation was very volatile, and many incumbents were not sure they would be retained.

Semop assemblyman and state assembly speaker Datuk Seri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar Asfia has had to refute speculation that he is among PBB incumbents to be dropped.

While many incumbents wait anxiously to see whether they will be renominated, several others have stated their intention to give way to new faces.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak senior lecturer Dr Jeniri Amir expects balance in the line-up in terms of age and career background. He is also sure the contenders will include women candidates.

PBB fielded seven new faces in the last state election. This time round, it is certain to have more first timers.

"They really want to rejuvenate the party to enable the new team to move forward and transform Sarawak," Jeniri said.

The 71-seat assembly which was dissolved on Monday had 63 representatives from Barisan Nasional -- with PBB contributing 35, Sarawak United People's Party 11, Parti Rakyat Sarawak nine, and the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party eight.

The DAP held six seats while PKR and Parti Cinta Malaysia had one representative each.

Abang Johari - Heart Specialist for Pending

Abang Johari knows a winner when he sees one.  He knows that Pending is now in safe hand when Dr Sim is the candidate to stand there for the next Sarawak State Election.  Although it is not official yet but he fully endorsed the Heart Specialist to heal the Pending sickness.  

Pending under DAP Violet Yong has been sick for these past five years!!  However, if Dr Sim got elected then Pending will be undergoing a major heart transplant under the new heart specialist.  

Violet Yong has been labelled as a talk only politicians.  Under the shadow of DAP Chong Chien Jen, they only work to provide comfort for their cronies.  

"There is no other developments being carried out just another empty promises!"

She is now busy lobbying her Personal Assistant to stand in Pending while she is eyeing for the PKR seat in Padungan!!!  The new dispute between PKR & DAP is an advantage to SUPP.  After the sex scandal video being rumoured the PKR puts high hopes to become the next biggest party in Malaysia will just fade away!!!

KUCHING: State Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident that cardiologist Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian is the perfect candidate to bring Pending back to its fold in the next state polls.

“The Barisan Nasional is the ‘heart’ of Sarawak. Pending has been ‘sick’ for the last five years. We need a heart specialist to ‘heal’ the sickness and put Pending on track to be developed on par with the other parts of Sarawak,” said Satok assemblyman Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during ‘Program Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ yesterday.


He described the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin regarding Dr Sim’s candidacy at Kenyalang Park last Saturday as a good sign.


Dr Sim’s name was also the first to be announced though BN claimed that it would only finalise its candidate list close to nomination day. Dr Sim will be contesting under Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) banner.


Referring to BN as the heart of Sarawak, Abang Johari further said that the concept of the coalition was to remain committed to the people without bias towards any race and religion in the state.


“The concept of BN will live on with Dr Sim in Pending,” said Abang Johari, likening the election somewhat to a medical check-up where listening to the doctor will lead to a healthy wellbeing.


He also said the prime minister has advised the people to think long and hard and elect only those who are able to walk the talk.


The Minister of Housing and Urban Development pointed out that through the BN government, areas like Sama Jaya are now thriving with hi-technology industries.


“Who would expect that the area to experience development until what it is today?” said Abang Johari, adding that a bridge is being proposed to be built across Tabuan river to Kampung Sri Maimunah.


“With the completion of the bridge, we can expect new townships to be developed within the next ten years,” he added, referring to the long term development plan for areas in Pending up to Demak Laut.


“We have to evaluate what is our future, we have to see what is beyond us. The people must decide properly to attain a better life as well as have good facilities for the future generation. Give your vote to Dr Sim for us (BN) to work together towards a better future,” enthused Abang Johari.


Commenting on the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today, he said: “My power will be given back to the people, which happens every five years. This will be the time for them to decide the fate of the heart. Please choose wisely for the sake of the future generations.”


He also said that it is PBB’s ‘style’ to make way for new faces and new blood to take over from the present members.


“Today we see the former representative for Pending, Datuk Sim Kheng Hui, giving way to Dr Sim. Even though they are SUPP members and we are PBB members, we are the same blood, pumped by the same heart (BN),” he enthused.


“Evaluate the performance of the current state representative for Pending who flew in on a rocket… and not of the same blood,” he jested.


The ‘Program Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’, organised by Special Affairs Department together with PBB Pending branch and SUPP Pending branch at SMK Pending, also saw 11 non-governmental organisations from three PBB branches receiving donations.

Who is Datuk T?

PKR Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul suggested today that businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay was the mysterious “Datuk T”, and that former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik is among those behind the screening of a sex video allegedly featuring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Johari also accused the two men of attempting to entice him and other PKR MPs to defect after he had viewed the recording, which he said was of a person resembled Anwar at a glimpse.

The PKR MP said he was brought by an uncle to Flamingo Hotel in Ampang here on Monday afternoon, just hours after reporters watched the same video and met the mysterious “Datuk T.”

Johari told a press conference today that the arrangements for the Monday screening of the sex video at the Carcosa Seri Negara had been made by Abdul Rahim's special officer.

At Flamingo Hotel, Johari said he was brought to a room where he met Shazryl  and Abdul Rahim.

After watching the video, he was asked by Abdul Rahim to arrange more screenings for other PKR MPs.

Abang Johari Brings Tourists to Satok

Satok is becoming a greater tourist attraction.  This is made possible by having a troubleshooter as an assemblyman.   Previously Abang Johari was the industrial minister where high technology industries landed on the shore of Sarawak.  

When he was the tourism minister, he became the laughing stock of the cabinet calling him the tourist guide.  However this did not stop him from bringing more tourist to Sarawak.  He introduced Sarawak as a beautiful land of the hornbills with fascinating beaches and friendly faces replaced from the orang utan mascot with the beautiful hornbills and traditional pua kumbu.  

He did not stop there.  He transformed the Sungai Sarawak by giving a facelift calling it Kuching Waterfront and now having another extension by the name of Esplanade.  A few wind power turbine could be seen at Esplanade to welcome eco-friendly green technology!!

Satok is now facing another facelift after the New Kubah Ria building being erected.  Sungai Bedil Besar will be the main camp for the Sarawak river taxi, albeit similar to the gondola but uniquely decorated with Sarawakians design.  

Apart from creating a tourist hot spot, flood mitigation is also being developed to ensure the safety of the river commuter and also the nearby villagers.  Well done and a big hand to Abang Johari.  His creative thinking has been treating us well in Satok!!  We are glad to have an assemblyman just like you!!!

Sg Bedil Besar to become tourist attraction

KUCHING: The government is eyeing Sungai Bedil Besar, here and will make the area into a tourist attraction engaging more efforts to enhance the landscape and water quality there.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas said the first phase of flood mitigation project there was going on in a ‘satisfactory’ manner and scheduled for completion in August this year.

Valued at RM6 million, the phase involves building a two-kilometre retention wall along the riverbank to prevent erosion.

Inspecting the project site at Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar in Petra Jaya near here yesterday, Uggah said the federal government had approved RM8 million for the second phase of the project to construct an eight-kilometre embankment in preventing flood.

The second phase is expected to commence in June this year. Both projects come under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

“These projects are not only meant to mitigate flood as eventually, this major river in Sarawak will be improved in terms of quality.

“While the government is working towards this end, the local communities are called to play their role in helping maintain the river’s quality,” he said.

Uggah, who is Betong MP, advised people to take care of the river to ensure cleanliness as their commitment could help attract more visitors to the area.

Asked when the second phase would be completed, he said: “We hope it will be done as soon as possible.”

Abang Johari in Sadong Jaya with PM

PM was greeted by thousand smiles as he made his way to Kampung Semera in Sadong Jaya.  He and the Chief Minister of Sarawak performed a walkabout around the village accompanied by other leaders from UMNO and PBB ie Hishamudin Hussein, Zahid Hamidi, Abang Johari, Wan Wahab and Nancy Shukri.

During the walkabout, Najib made a finishing touch to Surau Darul Makmur, witnessed by many cheerful faces. All the villagers were happy to meet the 1Malaysia champion, DS Najib Razak!!!  Apart from greeting the PM and CM, they also managed to perform the Zuhur prayer together.  It must be a delightful feeling for Sadong Jaya to have the honour of welcoming the PM and CM to their village.

SADONG JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s first visit to Kampung Semera in Sadong Jaya yesterday was greeted by thousands of villagers from the village and surrounding areas.

Najib, who was accompanied by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, arrived at 12.40pm and proceeded to perform the Zuhur prayers at Masjid Riadzusyalihin.

Both leaders then went on walkabout to greet the crowd that lined the main road of the village before making a stop at a roadside stall.

Najib, at one point, performed the finishing touches of the painting of Surau Darul Makmur located at Kampung Semera Tengah.

The 500-metre walk through the village ended at the Kampung Semera Community Hall for the ‘Majlis Rakyat Bersama Pemimpin’ programme.

An estimated 5,000 people turned up yesterday to greet and catch a glimpse of the leader of the nation accompanied by the state chief minister.

Also present yesterday were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussien, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi, Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri and Sadong Jaya assemblymen Datuk Wan Wahab Wan Sanusi.

Abang Johari Slaps SNAP and PKR

PKR has been trying to put SNAP under their leash.  Being SNAP, they will not bow or even lower their style and pride after seeing how PKR manage their own elections?!!!  SNAP led by Edwin Dundang was furious upon discovering that, PKR only allocated 3 minor seats to SNAP while PKR is eying 52 seats throughout the state!!!

PKR head is overblown that they thought of winning the whole Sarawak State Election on their own.  SNAP is fine with DAP and PAS however SNAP will snap at PKR who is trying to become the big boss of Sarawak.  So much for giving Sarawak Autonomy when they could not even stand seeing Sarawak Party getting all their candidates across the state???!!!

The wise Abang Johari also shares the same opinion with Edwin Dundang.  SNAP should get the honour to contest being the legend in Sarawak.  PKR is being selfish and arrogant by not allowing SNAP to contest more than 16 seats in the upcoming election.  Who is PKR compared to SNAP in Sarawak?

Shame on PKR, trying to bully SNAP with their head in their butts!!???  Poor Anwar Ibrahim who is still being charged of sodomy and waiting for his DNA to move the case forward!!!  There is no hope in Pakatan Rakyat if they could not win the majority.  SNAP and PAS incorrigible acts should not happen during this eleventh hour!!  Who do you think will get the peoples' vote, should PKR and SNAP decided to contest at the same area?  Definitely SNAP!!!

There is no more Pakatan in the Rakyat and after showing their true colors especially the big headed PKR now it is time to show to the people that they will be no future under the PKR or Pakatan Rakyat.  No consensus or whatsoever among them.  Definitely no teamwork and least cooperation during this coming 10th Sarawak General State Election!!! 

PKR-SNAP spat shows PKR’s arrogance – Abg Johari

KUCHING: The ongoing spat between Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Sarawak National Party (SNAP) on seat allocation shows that PKR is arrogant and selfish, commented PBB deputy president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said as an opposition coalition, PKR’s insistence that it contest in 52 seats showed the party’s true colour.

Abang Johari added that even PKR’s state chief Baru Bian was appointed by PKR’s central body in Kuala Lumpur which showed that the party did not even give the chance to Sarawakians to decide who should lead the party in the state.

“This goes to show that the party is arrogant and does not respect the people of Sarawak.

“And its wanting to contest in 52 seats in the coming state election also goes to show that the party is selfish as it leaves other Pakatan Rakyat members to fight for the 19 remaining seats,” Abang Johari told The Borneo Post at his office here yesterday.

Baru had said the party was eyeing 52 seats in case other PR members were not ready with their candidates.

To this Abang Johari reiterated that there was no consensus in PR and this also proved that the opposition was nowhere near the spirit of solid comradeship enjoyed by Barisan Nasional (BN) at both state and national levels.

“How can the people expect to trust that kind of partnership to work in Sarawak and to govern it fairly? As such the rakyat must know the fact and understand the current issues to have a clearer picture of the state’s political scenario and not be easily misled by the opposition.

“As for BN, we have been with the people all this while and we have proven we are capable to further develop the state. While we have a mammoth project like SCORE, PR has nothing concrete to further develop the state,” said Abang Johari, who is also Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

On Tuesday, SNAP threw a bombshell by disclosing that the party would contest in at least 40 seats, leaving only 31 seats up for grabs by its PR component parties if the opposition pact was serious in facing BN on one-to-one fights in all the 71 state seats.

SNAP president Edwin Dundang even revealed 16 names, who he said were the first batch from the list of 40 names of its potential candidates. Meanwhile, the state election is believed to be gathering new momentum with the joint official visit of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to Serian this weekend

Abang Johari - Knowledge Is The Key to Success

 Abang Johari reminded the public from lower income group not to expect constant aid from the government.  Based on the current economic structure, they were advised to equip their youngsters to learn and gain extra knowledge in education and equipped themselves with necessary skills to compete in the world outside. 

Based from current trend, people are craving for knowledge and cannot rely on odd jobs to provide needs for their family.   SPM and STPM certificate cannot be the benchmark to provide ample salary for the family and the public must be having the mindset to educate and let their children study at universities or higher learning institutions.  

 

There are many opportunities for them and they need to grab it!!  PTPN and Yayasan Sarawak would be willing to provide financial aids provided that they are really from these low incomes group.  

 

Government aid is only temporary, says Johari

KUCHING: The low-income community in Sarawak must not be over-dependent on government aid.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said government aid was only temporary, to help those who needed it over a certain period only.

He urged the low-income group to equip their children with education and skills, adding that over-dependence on monetary assistance from the Government would discourage people from working hard.

He said in its efforts to transform and improve the standard of living of the people, the Government had provided basic infrastructures such as schools, skills training centres and universities.

“I suggest that those who are still stuck in the low-income group to keep working hard and help their children succeed in education. The children are the ones who will help you get out of poverty.

“Encourage them to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to compete in the job market and to earn better income,” Johari said at Gempur NKRA (National Key Results Areas) government aid presentation to folk from Santubong and Petra Jaya parliamentary constituencies yesterday.
