Abang Johari - Knowledge Is The Key to Success

Datuk Amar Abang Johari
Abang Johari reminded the public from lower income group not to expect constant aid from the government.  Based on the current economic structure, they were advised to equip their youngsters to learn and gain extra knowledge in education and equipped themselves with necessary skills to compete in the world outside.

Based from current trend, people are craving for knowledge and cannot rely on odd jobs to provide needs for their family.   SPM and STPM certificate cannot be the benchmark to provide ample salary for the family and the public must be having the mindset to educate and let their children study at universities or higher learning institutions.

There are many opportunities for them and they need to grab it!!  PTPN and Yayasan Sarawak would be willing to provide financial aids provided that they are really from these low incomes group.

Government aid is only temporary, says Johari
Posted Star Online, Sunday February 27, 2011 by Rintos Mail
KUCHING: The low-income community in Sarawak must not be over-dependent on government aid.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said government aid was only temporary, to help those who needed it over a certain period only.

He urged the low-income group to equip their children with education and skills, adding that over-dependence on monetary assistance from the Government would discourage people from working hard.

He said in its efforts to transform and improve the standard of living of the people, the Government had provided basic infrastructures such as schools, skills training centres and universities.

“I suggest that those who are still stuck in the low-income group to keep working hard and help their children succeed in education. The children are the ones who will help you get out of poverty.

“Encourage them to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to compete in the job market and to earn better income,” Johari said at Gempur NKRA (National Key Results Areas) government aid presentation to folk from Santubong and Petra Jaya parliamentary constituencies yesterday.

Radio Free Sarawak DJ is Peter John Jaban!!!

Previously he was a DJ from Cats FM, a well known local radio station in Sarawak.  Currently he is working alongside with Former Britain's Prime Minister's Sister-in-Law Clare Revcastle Brown, an investigative reporter in London.  He is known as Papa Orang Utan, a DJ for Radio Free Sarawak so-called to liberate Sarawak.
Longhouse during British Colony
Is this his propaganda to claim asylum to stay in London.  If you noticed they are trying to link Taib Mahmud with Ross Boyert.  Now they are trying to portray that Taib Mahmud is a vicious man.
Current Modern Longhouse with tile flooring

Her story is based on the era when British was occupying Borneo, she is actually describing the way the British Governments 'aiding' the locale.  Due to her confusion between previous British empire and current Malaysian Government she is trying to make peace to herself by organising this plot and manipulating the good people abroad.   I am sure she witnessed a lot of nonsense in her childhood.  This is her way to show the world.

Please bring your agenda elsewhere, we do not want people that doesn't know the real value of life in Sarawak to condemn our State and our beloved Chief Minister.

She did mention that they are 5 people in her team.  I hope she comes down to Sarawak to witness what Taib Mahmud has done to Sarawak instead of hearing reports on corruption.  Taib is taking care of his people.  He was a millionaire even before he became a politician.  Please bear that in mind and do some research before fighting empty handed based on nonsense claims!!!.

I am sure, people who is funding her works is lying to her.  Maybe there are not telling her the truth!?? Or she is hiding the truth??

Gordon Brown's sister-in-law tackles corruption in Borneo

Posted London Evening Standard 22 Feb 2011 by David Cohen

In a flat above a restaurant in Covent Garden, an investigative reporter called Clare and a tribesman from Borneo covered in tattoos prepare to transmit their daily revolutionary radio broadcast deep into the Borneo jungle.

They make for an unlikely double act - she is a white, middle-aged Englishwoman, and he the proud grandson of a Dayak headhunter who broadcasts under the pseudonym Papa Orang Utan. Their aim is no less outlandish: to expose the alleged corruption of Taib Mahmud, chief minister of the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo 6,500 miles from London, and bring an end to his 30-year rule.

"This is Radio Free Sarawak," begins Papa Orang Utan, donning his headphones to interview a village headman who has been forcibly removed from his land and who, quite remarkably, speaks to them on a mobile phone from the edge of the Borneo rainforest. Clare briefs Papa: "Make sure you ask if he knows that it's chief minister Taib who has stolen their land? And get who he'll be voting for!"

Until now the identity of the "pirates" behind Radio Free Sarawak has been a closely guarded secret - and for good reason. Scandal-plagued Taib, 74, is one of the world's most ruthless and wealthiest men - richer allegedly than the Sultan of Brunei, whose independent country lies alongside - and locals who oppose him can feel the full force of his retribution.

But today is a watershed: the duo have bravely decided to out themselves ahead of the upcoming Sarawak elections, expected in April. Indeed, the Evening Standard can reveal that the mystery Englishwoman who set up Radio Free Sarawak four months ago and who brought out the tattooed tribesman - real name Peter John Jaban - to front her broadcasts is in fact Clare Rewcastle Brown, sister-in-law of former prime minister Gordon Brown.

The last time she was in the public eye was in May 2009 when she published a letter defending the then prime minister's cleaning arrangements in the wake of the expenses scandal. Her piece, "The true story of Gordon Brown, the cleaner and my husband", laid out their "very ordinary shared cleaning arrangements" and explained why The Telegraph's front page "scoop" was groundless.

"My poor husband Andrew," she recalls, "was the face on the front page on the first day of the expenses scandal, which was pretty damn unfair given that Gordon's arrangement with the cleaner was later judged wholly legitimate. The reporters arrived on our doorstep thinking they'd 'got Gordon' but they hadn't done their due diligence and when we presented them with the truth, they didn't want to hear it."

Today she sees less of her husband's older brother, "Gordon and Sarah being mainly up in Scotland", but they are "a close-knit family" and "Gordon is hugely supportive," she says.

Rewcastle Brown, 51, born in Sarawak to British parents in the days before the former British colony was handed over to Malaysia, lived in the region until the age of eight, and she is the author of the hard-hitting Sarawak Report, a hitherto anonymous blog that gets 18,000 hits a day.

"English is still the unifying language in Sarawak and I use my blog and broadcasts to expose the outrageous deforestation which has seen 95 per cent of Sarawak's rainforest cut down and replaced by logging and palm oil plantations which have enriched Taib and his family," she says. "What's more, my investigations indicate some of the Taib family money is right here in London and includes a lucrative property portfolio in the heart of our capital."

Her work, she adds, is also about "giving the 2.5 million oppressed people of Sarawak a choice".
"The leader of the opposition party, a charismatic human rights lawyer called Baru Bian, inspires hope of real change in the upcoming election, but scandalously only one-third of the electorate are registered to vote and the corrupt Malaysian government turn a blind eye because Taib always delivers them Sarawak, their richest state."

She says their decision to go public was prompted by death threats posted to the Sarawak Report website and by the mysterious fatality of her chief whistleblower in America. "Before Christmas, Taib's disaffected US aide Ross Boyert was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room with a plastic bag around his head. The inquest is still pending but there was a sense that Peter and I could be in danger. Rather than hide, we've decided to come out fighting."

She kicks off her leather boots and laughs. "The irony is that Taib and his people think we're a huge operation but there are just five of us with a couple of laptops and a mixer. Advances in MP3 technology mean that these days shortwave radio is cheap and easy to do. We've been so effective that Taib's people believe we're funded by George Soros, whose foundation funds Radio Free Burma."

Her outfit - started in October from the dining room of her loft in Victoria where she lives "in shabby dilapidation" with Andrew and their two teenage children - costs less than £10,000 a month, she says. Initially she funded it herself but she's since roped in some "better-off friends" who help out "anonymously". "Not Gordon," she hastens to add. "His support is strictly moral!"

Her passionate dedication to a cause 99 per cent of Londoners have never heard of sometimes causes strains, she admits, with friends and family. "But I honestly believe that Taib is probably one of the worst environmental criminals on the planet and that he has taken huge amounts from the country of my birth."

She smiles. "He never saw me coming. When he set up his property companies in 1982, he could never have imagined that some mad woman sitting in her kitchen in London would unravel his property empire simply by scrutinising company reports online."

As an investigative journalist who started with the BBC World Service in 1983, she is better equipped than most to uncover the wealth of the Mahmud family.

"My investigations have indicated that Taib and his family have a property empire in Canada, the US and the UK. Funds have been generated by Taib selling off rainforests with some of the money going through the British Virgin Islands."

The Evening Standard put these allegations to those who are behind the companies and they were denied.

Rewcastle Brown's passion for the rainforests of Sarawak was kindled as a child when she accompanied her mother, Karis, a midwife, into the jungle. Back then, Sarawak had the most biodiverse rainforest in the world with 3,000 species of trees, 15,000 plants, 420 birds and 221 mammals.

"My mother would drag me to remote clinics to show the indigenous Dayaks what a healthy baby should look like," she recalls.

"Everyone in those villages sleeps in one long-house and my mother frequently saved the lives of their sick babies. As a kid, my first friends were the local children and we used to climb trees and run barefoot, dodging the odd scorpion."

The family came to the UK when Rewcastle Brown was eight and she attended a private boarding school and later finished her masters in international relations at the LSE. It would be 38 years before she returned to Sarawak on a media trip where the degradation of the rainforest - so evident from the air - shocked her to the core.

In 2008 she went back to report on a by-election and secretly film companies clearing rainforest for oil palm. That was when she "fell into a peat bog and nearly died", and it was also when she met Jaban, 46, an election monitor fired from Taib's state-controlled radio for allowing callers to criticise the chief minister.

Last year she invited Jaban to become the voice of Radio Free Sarawak in London. It was a drastic step because it meant that while Taib stays in power, Jaban can never go back.

"I miss my four children, I miss my home," he says, tears streaming. He looks vulnerable, like a fish out of water, but he suddenly straightens. "I am prepared to die for this cause," he says. "In the days of my grandfather, you had to bring a decent clutch of heads as a sign of your masculinity when you got married. Today things have changed but you still have to be a man."

What are their chances of success? Rewcastle Brown ponders for a moment. "People say our man hasn't got a prayer in the election and that Taib will intimidate voters as he always does but I think our reports are having a huge effect and that there's a groundswell for change."

She smiles thinly. "You've got to take heart from what is happening in the Middle East to rulers who seemed equally immovable until just a few weeks ago."

Failed Attempt - Protest Against Taib Mahmud??

Photo Credits to Zulhaidah.com- Planned Protest Against CM
Is it true that Sarawakian has different attitude from the Western Malaysia?  This is in terms of political propaganda.  It will take another 30 years for a real protest to occur?

This is a real spoken words from the grassroots leader when asked to comment on the Sunday planned protest.   He did not want his name to be mentioned.

"Sarawakian is a peaceful citizen and will never get involved and be foolish enough to commit such act in public.  They have learnt  during the Ming Court Incident and nobody dares when it involves  anything that has go to do with the Chief Minister of Sarawak!!!"

It is a kind of respect for the CM since he has been working all his life to put us (Sarawak) where we are right now!  We cannot get immediate development or the others in the suburb would be left behind forever.

When being asked about the date of the election he commented that only CM will let them know, but all he could say is that BN is far ready than ever to face the coming Sarawak General Election!
Planned Taib protest a no show, says police

Posted BERNAMA, February 21, 2011

KUCHING - An alleged planned protest against Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud did not take place at Padang Merdeka, Kuching today, police said.

Padang Merdeka was quiet and peaceful, just like on any Sunday afternoon. Several tourists were spotted walking across the field while a few police MPVs were seen being driven around, apparently monitoring the area.

Kuching police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong said police monitored the area, but there was nothing unusual to report.

“It was good when nobody showed up for the protest,” he told Bernama.

A circulating short messaging service (SMS) stated that a protest against the Sarawak chief minister had been arranged for 2pm today at Padang Merdeka and asked recipients to “either join in or avoid the area due to expected traffic congestion”.

It was not known who was behind the sending of the SMS or the alleged planned protest.

Yesterday, the Movement for Change, Sarawak (MoCS) chief Francis Siah denied that the movement was behind any such protest. – Bernama

UMNO Gains Root In Sarawak??!!

There is another breakthrough story happening in Miri.  As we all know, the Prime Minister meets the ADUN, while political secretary has another hidden agenda.  It is believed that below minutes were taking place at that particular moments.
  • To identify the Malay PBB assemblymen or assemblywomen who could be roped into the pro-UMNO PBB group
  • To identify the Malay-majority constituencies which pro-UMNO PBB candidates could be fielded to replace the incumbents who are certain to resist any efforts to join the group; and
  • To find ways to create frictions or tensions among all political parties in the State BN of which when the situation has become chaotic, UMNO would be coming into Sarawak as the God-sent saviour

Motorola Xoom Launched in February!

The Motorola Xoom has super-fast dual-core processor running on Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). It contained powerful Google developed software specifically designed for tablet market. It has front 2MP and rear facing 5 MP camera, a camcoder with Adobe Flash Player mounted on an 10.1 inches widescreen HD display.

Motorola Xoom is the first tablet running with Honeycomb.  Way much better than Samsung Tablet with Android Froyo.  Google has tweaked the interface giving tab browsing capability, comparable with a small monitor PC with flash enabled.  It is equipped with mini USB and HDMI-port along with Wifi and 3G connectivity.  I bet what would the iPad boss feels when this ultra sensation hits town right after Valentine.  It will be Xoom fever all over.  Maybe BlackBerry Playbook can cure this sickness?

Agong Hits Mach Inside Sukhoi

Agong survived the Sukhoi.  He flew on the most advanced superjet in Malaysia.  It must be really exciting to get on one of those superjet.   Based on his smile and expressions I believed he really enjoyed being flown on the Sukohoi.  It was indeed a grace to be flown with the Agong inside.  Asghar, the pilot, must be excited and thrilled at the same time flying with the most important man in Malaysia and throttling the most expensive jets in Malaysia!!

Have a nice flight Sukhoi!!!

Sukhoi (Flanker-C) SU-30MKM

SimplyMEPIS for Old Hardware

SimplyMEPIS Logon
Pentium III 20GB HDD 256 MB RAM with OpenGL
This week I have been working on IBM Net Vista. I got it from my friends who won it from an auction.   He told me it was too old, ( Pentium III) with an OpenGL graphic card. He wanted to dispose it because he told me it was too slow with 256 MB RAM.  20GB HDD and CD ROM.

Details and package versions

SimplyMepis is based on a mix of Debian Sarge and Sid.
  • Kernels 2.4.26 and 2.6.7
  • KDE 3.2.3
  • OpenOffice.org 1.1.2
  • Gimp 2.0.4
  • Mozilla 1.7.2
  • Skype 1.0
  • Quanta 3.2
  • K3B 0.11.14
  • Audacity 1.2
I told him just give it to me so that I will try to hack it with linux. I had difficult times getting the working linux for this old system.  Luckily I came across simplyMEPIS debian based ubuntu type distro.  Most of the website gave excellent rating for it.  I used to play with Mandrake, Mandriva, Knoppix and this is another challenge for me.

I burnt the iso from a nearby mirror site.  http://mepis.idrepo.or.id/mepis/released/
Burnt it using Nero and walla I had to give it a try.

The problem I encountered was installing the distro to the hard disk via a CD ROM.  After getting through the Net Vista Boot Sequence I still faced the CD ROM won't read or boot up the distro disc.  I opened up the CD ROM and swapped it with my mate's CD ROM and it start to boot up just like any other Live Linux on CD distro.

All I can say is that the old IBM Net Vista is now able to run online with mozilla firefox and konqueror.  It has preconfigured KDE able to housed 4 separate desktop.
I put it in my living room and my guest now can access the internet.  I did hook up usb keyboard and usb apple keyboard to replace the old IBM keyboard.  It is neat.

It is indeed 20/20 for SimplyMepis.  No need to install driver. Just plug the internet cable and etch0 is automatically connected.

Malaysians Students in Egypt Can Safely Return Home

Families are now happy upon hearing that Malaysian Student in Egypt are being evacuated to Jeddah before flown home.   The Malaysian Government are working around the clock closely with the Malaysian Embassy to ensure the safety of thousands of students there.

Students are also advised to contact the Malaysian Embassy and avoid going to high risk places.  They are not to be involved in the Egyptian internal matters there.
Apart from taking flights, the Bunga Mas Navy will provide support to evacuate Malaysian to safety as well, Jeddah has been identified as the meeting points before leaving to KLIA.

Well done to the Malaysian Embassy for fast and immediate responds before things become worse in Egypt.

Egypt Crisis: Flights To KLIA Cancelled, Malaysians To Be Evacuated To Jeddah

Posted in BERNAMA, February 03, 2011 19:00 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- The earlier plan to evacuate Malaysians from Cairo direct to Kuala Lumpur has been cancelled due to the latest situation in the crisis-hit Egypt, the prime minister's political secretary Datuk Shahlan Ismail said.

He said the first flight carrying Malaysians from Cairo, which was earlier scheduled to land at KL International Airport at 5am Friday, would instead land in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Shahlan told Bernama that the change in the plan had to be carried out so that the aircraft could be fully utilised to provide shuttle flights between Jeddah and Cairo, allowing for the evacuation of a bigger number of people.

"All aircraft operated by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and the Royal Malaysian Air Force will operate round-the-clock between Jeddah and Cairo.

"We want to take out as many people as possible due to the worsening situation in Egypt," he said.

Shahlan told Bernama earlier in the morning that the first flight out of Egypt, carrying 309 people including students and those who are pregnant and sick, was scheduled to land at KLIA at 5am Friday.

He said there would be two flights from Cairo to Jeddah on Thursday and 12 more on Friday.

The navy's Bunga Mas 5 auxiliary ship would take part in the operation on Saturday, he added.

Shahlan appealed to Malaysians in Egypt to be patient and not resorting to any acts of provocation.

"There is no need for any action that could aggravate the situation. The government has pledged to take all Malaysians irrespective of which state they are from. I hope that they can be patient," he said.

Shahlan is now in Egypt as part of the Malaysian monitoring team led by Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay.
