UTM is Malaysia's Top-ranked University

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is now the country's highest ranked university, according to two online-ranking systems.

The two -- Webometrics (www.webometrics.info) and 4 International Colleges and Universities (www.4icu.org) -- determine university rankings based on the institute's material contents, references, visibility and scholarships through cyber-based activities.

UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang said high ranking universities' contents and scholarly works almost always acted as a reference point for others.

"In today's context, where information technology and communication is the preferred method of information gathering, referencing is mostly done via online portals," he said in a statement yesterday.

The positions determined by Webometrics were announced on July 30. Coming behind UTM are Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

UTM is in 419th position in the world ranking.

USM is 428th, UKM at 462nd, UM at 552nd, and UPM at 589th.
 

According to Webometrics, universities in the United States hogged the top 10 positions with Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the helm.

The list continued with Harvard University in second place, followed by Stanford University, Cornell University, University of California, Berkeley and others, all based in the US.


Australia-based www.4icu.org placed UTM at 280th place against other universities in the world.

Zaini said UTM's success in attaining the top-position in the country was the result of the university's team spirit and hard work.

"The university focuses on our 'high impact and differentiation strategy' to enable the organisation to function smoothly and competitively."

Agong Hits Mach Inside Sukhoi

Agong survived the Sukhoi.  He flew on the most advanced superjet in Malaysia.  It must be really exciting to get on one of those superjet.   Based on his smile and expressions I believed he really enjoyed being flown on the Sukohoi.  It was indeed a grace to be flown with the Agong inside.  Asghar, the pilot, must be excited and thrilled at the same time flying with the most important man in Malaysia and throttling the most expensive jets in Malaysia!!

 Agong Flown On Sukhoi Fighter Jet

BUTTERWORTH: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin was today flown on a Sukhoi SU-30MKM fighter jet in conjunction with his visit at the air force base here.

The aircraft, piloted by Squadron Commanding Officer II Lt-Col Mohd Asghar Khan Gauriman Khan, flew in a supersonic speed over Langkawi, Kedah and Penang and landed back 45 minutes later.

It was accompanied by another fighter jet, the FA/18D Hornet.

Royal Malaysian Air Force commander Gen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud told reporters Tuanku Mizan was happy and thrilled by the experience.

Earlier, Tuanku Mizan arrived at the base and greeted by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Azizan Ariffin and Rodzali.

He then inspected a guard-of-honour and was later briefed on the Sukhoi SU-30MKM fighter jet.

He also visited the fighter jet simulation and a static display of the aircraft before ending his visit at 2pm. -- BERNAMA

Malaysians Students in Egypt Can Safely Return Home

Families are now happy upon hearing that Malaysian Student in Egypt are being evacuated to Jeddah before flown home.   The Malaysian Government are working around the clock closely with the Malaysian Embassy to ensure the safety of thousands of students there.  

Students are also advised to contact the Malaysian Embassy and avoid going to high risk places.  They are not to be involved in the Egyptian internal matters there.  

Apart from taking flights, the Bunga Mas Navy will provide support to evacuate Malaysian to safety as well, Jeddah has been identified as the meeting points before leaving to KLIA.  

Well done to the Malaysian Embassy for fast and immediate responds before things become worse in Egypt.

Egypt Crisis: Flights To KLIA Cancelled, Malaysians To Be Evacuated To Jeddah

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- The earlier plan to evacuate Malaysians from Cairo direct to Kuala Lumpur has been cancelled due to the latest situation in the crisis-hit Egypt, the prime minister's political secretary Datuk Shahlan Ismail said.

He said the first flight carrying Malaysians from Cairo, which was earlier scheduled to land at KL International Airport at 5am Friday, would instead land in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Shahlan told Bernama that the change in the plan had to be carried out so that the aircraft could be fully utilised to provide shuttle flights between Jeddah and Cairo, allowing for the evacuation of a bigger number of people.

"All aircraft operated by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and the Royal Malaysian Air Force will operate round-the-clock between Jeddah and Cairo.

"We want to take out as many people as possible due to the worsening situation in Egypt," he said.

Shahlan told Bernama earlier in the morning that the first flight out of Egypt, carrying 309 people including students and those who are pregnant and sick, was scheduled to land at KLIA at 5am Friday.

He said there would be two flights from Cairo to Jeddah on Thursday and 12 more on Friday.

The navy's Bunga Mas 5 auxiliary ship would take part in the operation on Saturday, he added.

Shahlan appealed to Malaysians in Egypt to be patient and not resorting to any acts of provocation.

"There is no need for any action that could aggravate the situation. The government has pledged to take all Malaysians irrespective of which state they are from. I hope that they can be patient," he said.

Shahlan is now in Egypt as part of the Malaysian monitoring team led by Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay.

BECOME ETHNIC BRIDGE BUILDERS INSTEAD OF ETHNIC HEROES SAYS YAYASAN 1MALAYSIA

Petaling Jaya, 19 January 2011- Yayasan 1Malaysia has issued a challenge to all Malaysians to make 2011 the year of ethnic bridge builders.

 

“We have enough ethnic heroes; what we sorely need are ethnic bridge builders who can neutralize the politics of hate that seem to be on the rise in the country” said Professor Dr Chandra Muzaffar, Chairman of Yayasan 1Malaysia.

Noting that most Malaysians are moderates who value the peace and harmony that exists in the country, he said that it was time for Malaysians to be aware and make a stand against divisive forces that sensationalise innocuous isssues.

“Respect and trust are the cornerstones of the peace we currently enjoy. Let us work together to eliminate ethnic biases and stereotypes which tear our social fabric and cause disunity. I urge Malaysians to choose unity above hate whenever they are  confronted with individuals and groups who sow the seeds of ethnic discord”, said Professor Dr Chandra Muzaffar.

On its part, Yayasan 1Malaysia has launched a support group called “Friends of Yayasan 1Malaysia”, to initiate and bolster national unity efforts in Malaysia.

“Being a “Friend of the Yayasan 1Malaysia” means becoming more closely involved in and taking part in specially organised activities aimed at further developing national unity and integration in a friendly and dynamic environment. It means sharing interests and concerns with Malaysians from all walks of life. Comprising individuals and organisations, this is a non-profit group under the auspices of Yayasan 1Malaysia (Y1M)” he said.  Individuals and corporations wishing to become a “Friend of Yayasan 1Malaysia” can register at Y1M website www.yayasan1malaysia.org.

Yayasan 1Malaysia also announced the launch of its new logo, to better reflect the energy, commitment and aspirations of the foundation.

When computer engineer Wan Jon Yew left Malaysia in 2005 for a job in Singapore, all he wanted was to work in the city state for a few years before going home. Now, he says, he will never return.

With a family, a home and a car, he now plans to settle in Singapore for good — one of many Malaysians stampeding abroad every year in a worrying “brain drain” the government is trying to reverse.

“I wouldn’t consider going back to Malaysia, I won’t look back. If I were ever going to leave Singapore, I would migrate to Australia,” said the 28-year-old, who now has permanent resident status.

“It’s not about the money. I could have a better quality of life in Malaysia with my pay. I could have a semi-detached bungalow and have a maid there, but I would rather live in a government flat in Singapore,” he said.

Wan, who is ethnically Chinese, is one of some 700,000 Malaysians — most of them highly educated — who are currently working abroad in an exodus that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government is struggling to reverse.

The “brain drain” has a number of causes. Some have been lured by higher salaries, but others blame political and social gripes including preferential policies for Muslim Malays, who form the majority.

Many feel constrained by life in a country where the ruling coalition has been in power for half a century, and where progress on freedom of expression, the right to assembly, and tackling corruption has been slow.

A decades-old affirmative action policy which hands Malays and the indigenous groups privileges in housing, education and business, has been criticized as uncompetitive and improperly benefiting the elite.

As a consequence, many of those who have left are members of Malaysia’s ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities, who make up some 25 percent and 10 percent of the population respectively.

Last month Najib launched a “Talent Corporation” with incentives to woo back highly skilled workers and foreign professionals.

Malaysia has ambitions to transform itself into a developed nation by 2020, but a lack of human capital is a barrier to reaching that goal. 

World Bank data cited by the Malaysian press shows that while globally the number of migrants rose 2.4 times between 1960 and 2005, Malaysia’s diaspora registered a staggering 155-fold increase over the 45-year period.

“I don’t want my children to go through the unfair treatment,” said Wan, who believes Singapore offers “fair competition.”

“I’m not proud of being a Malaysian because I think the government doesn’t treat me as a Malaysian,” he said. “I would rather be a PR [permanent resident], a second-class citizen in a foreign country, than to be a citizen in my own country.”

Wan said his wife, an IT analyst, renounced her citizenship in July, joining a queue of about 30 Malaysians lining up to do so on that day alone at the Malaysian embassy in Singapore.

Commentators are skeptical over whether the government’s latest effort to reverse the “brain drain” will be successful.

“Money does have a significant role but the most important factor, I think, is opportunity. Malaysia is too politicized and opportunities are not evenly available to everyone,” political analyst Wan Saiful Wan Jan said.

In one example, he said academics are reluctant to work in local universities as they must sign a “loyalty pledge” barring them from, among other things, criticizing government policies.

Wan Saiful said the Talent Corporation will be “another expensive failure” if it does not tackle these structural problems.

“When I apply for a job, buy a house, register my children for school etc, why does it matter what my race or religion is? This should stop,” the analyst said.

Only Nine Telcos Get 4G Apparatus Assignments For Time Being, Says MCMC

CYBERJAYA, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The government has not assigned the 4G spectrum to any telecommunication company as yet but had merely given apparatus assignments (AA) to nine telcos to pave the way for the early adoption of the long-term evolution (LTE) or 4G technology mobile services, said Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Chairman Tan Sri Khalid Ramli.

 

Citing that there was a difference between AA and Spectrum Assignments (SA), he said MCMC only awarded the AA for them to use the 2600MHz spectrum band to roll out their 4G wireless broadband services and had not given them the Spectrum Assignment (SA).

"The decision to award to the nine telcos was made after a lengthy consultative and deliberation process with various technical groups which started about two years ago. It was not something which was done a month ago," he told Bernama.

Khalid said the nine telcos, which had been picked based on their experience, technological capability in promoting innovation and financial strength, had been asked to submit detailed business plans by year-end on what they planned to do.

An apparatus assignment confers rights on a company to use the spectrum to operate a network facility of a specified kind at a specified frequency or in any specified frequency band or bands.

4G, which refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless technology standards, is the successor to 3G and 2G families of standards. 4G technology can deliver 100 Mbps or megabits per second, which allows a music album to be downloaded as fast as five seconds or an hour-long TV show in about 30 seconds.

The companies that had been awarded the AA by MCMC include existing 3G and WiMAX players, and a new entrant. They are Celcom Axiata Berhad, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, U-Mobile Sdn Bhd, Asiaspace Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, RedTone Marketing Sdn Bhd, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd and Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd.

Khalid said MCMC may award the SA if it was satisfied with the business plan and service readiness of the telcos in installing their equipment and services.

These companies were also required to pay annual fees to MCMC in order to use the AA to roll out their 4G services and would not receive grants of any kind from MCMC or from the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund, which was specifically for developing communications facilities in the rural areas, he explained.

"If they want a piece of action, they will actually have to pay for it," he said, adding that the government would consider giving the SA later on if they could prove their capability.

"We may decide on that later on. In the past, we did allocate the spectrum at a much higher fee. This stage hasn't come as yet (for 4G)," he said in likening MCMC as the regulator and custodian of the Malaysian spectrum.

Khalid also said the government may decide to take back the spectrum if some companies did not perform up to expectations.

Asked why MCMC had decided to award the AA to nine telcos instead of only few like the current market leaders in the country, for example, Khalid said this was based on the need for greater transparency and competition.

Under the provisions of the Communication and Multimedia Act, he said MCMC had to act for the long-term benefit of end-users while taking on a technology-neutral approach.

On why MCMC was initiating 4G technology now while some telcos had yet to provide the full range of 3G or WiMAX technology services, Khalid explained that the regulator was planning for the future.

At certain times in Kuala Lumpur, network congestion occurred due to sharp demand and MCMC had to start work on 4G now to avoid a breakdown in services later, he said.

"It is time to migrate to something better," he stressed.

PAS Youth Slaps Anwar Without Condoms On?!!

All this while there are supporting Gay Party which is the Parti Keadilan Rakyat?  Suddenly, they channeled their anger towards Adam Lambert? Is it because they cannot tolerate anymore when all this while ,allegations and police reports were being made accusing Anwar Ibrahim, which is PAS allied for Pakatan Rakyat being 'gay'.  In fact, the correct term is it bi-sexual?

Earlier today, many papers reported that Anwar did not use condoms when sodomising his assistant,  In one case, he sodomised the poor chap for the eighth times without using any condoms at all?  Is he trying to promote HIV? When he himself knows that gay sexual behaviour will encourage more HIV among the party members?

Why is the PAS Youth only concerns about Adam Lambert who by rights practices safe sex when they  could ignore Anwar's immoral practice?  PAS should re-evaluate their partnership with PKR since all evidence pointed towards Anwar being gay!!!

However, one could even say that maybe PAS loves it from behind!!!?

KUALA LUMPUR, – PAS today demanded that authorities cancel a planned concert by US glam rocker Adam Lambert that they say is promoting “gay culture” in the mainly Muslim country.


PAS has also threatened to call “as many of its members and supporters” to proselytise to concert-goers if the performance by the former “American Idol” runner-up goes ahead on Thursday, a party official said.


“Adam Lambert’s shows... are outrageous, with lewd dancing and a gay performance that includes kissing male dancers, this is not good for people in our country,” said PAS Youth leader Nasrudin Hasan. Homosexual sex is a criminal offence in Malaysia.


PAS is Malaysia’s second-largest political party with close to a million members and is a partner in a rainbow opposition grouping led by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.


Foreign acts often draw protests from PAS, which since 2007 has campaigned against performances by singers including Beyonce, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne and Mariah Carey.

Police in May broke up a demonstration by Islamists including PAS supporters protesting against a concert by US rapper Pitbull, underscoring a deepening tide of Islamic conservatism in the country.

An official from the Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry was reported saying that the singer had signed a contract agreeing to abide by the ministry’s rules on performances, which can require foreign performers to tone down their acts to suit local sensibilities. – Reuters

Malaysian True Hero: Kanang anak Langkau

Sarawakians feel safer within Malaysia

SRI AMAN: Kanang Langkau, 65 , a retired soldier with the rare honour of having been conferred two gallantry awards, sang praises for Sarawak's independence through Malaysia.  

He said the participation of Sarawak and also Sabah, in the formation of Malaysia in 1963 had brought much benefit to the two states in terms of peace and security.

"After becoming a part of Malaysia, we in Sarawak no longer harbour any fear of foreign threats.  In fact, we feel safer and are able to better focus on development, " he told Bernama when approached at the Malaysia Day celebration in Sri Aman.  

Kanang, of the Dayak community, has joined the Sarawak Rangers, famous for the motto "Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban", as an Iban tracker on April 21st, 1962. He was absorbed into the Malaysian Rangers when Malaysia was proclaimed on September 16th, 1963.  

He retired from the service after 21 years as Warrant Officer I.  He was awarded the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa and the Panglima Gagah Berani awards by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in 1981 and 1987 respectively.  

These awards were for his bravery when dealing with the communist insurgents who outnumbered his team of soldiers and killed five of the enemy.  His team also captured equipments as well in the Korbu Forest Reserve on June 1st, 1979.  

Kanang said Sarawak was fortunate to have joined Malaysia because the people lived in peace and were united regardless of race and religion.  

He said that the new generation of Malaysia should be made aware of the necessity to remain united in the spirit of 1Malaysia which transcended race and religion.  

"In Sarawak, it is important to maintain unity among the people and to ensure that they are not marginalised from development and progress. " he said.  

The Sri Aman Division Malaysia Day celebration was launched by the Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister, Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.
